How to see avoidable damage in Warcraft Logs
In Warcraft Logs, open the pull's Damage Taken, select the ability and read each player's hits: each hit is a time they were caught. That covers one ability on one pull. To see every avoidable mechanic for every player across your pulls, paste the report into LogSnitch.
What counts as avoidable damage?
Damage the fight tells you to move out of: waves, swirlies, frontals, puddles, lines. Some damage looks avoidable but reaches everyone, or only hurts less the farther you stand; being hit by that is not a mistake.
LogSnitch tells them apart from each guide's own instruction: "dodge", "stay out", "move away" make a hit a mistake. On The Venomous Abyss, 38 mechanics on Mythic are read that way (every boss).
How do I find avoidable damage on Warcraft Logs?
Check it on Warcraft Logs
- Open the report on warcraftlogs.com and pick the pull.
- Open Damage Taken and select the ability you want to check.
- Read each player's hits: each one is a time they were caught.
- Repeat for every avoidable ability, then for every pull you want to compare.
That is one table per ability per pull. On a boss with a dozen things to dodge and ten pulls, it is a long evening.
Should I count hits or ticks?
Hits. A player makes one mistake when a wave catches them; the damage-over-time that follows is what it cost, logged as ticks. Adding the two over-counts: one Ula'tek pull logged 3 hits and 30 ticks of Caustic Waves. See hits vs ticks.
What about damage the whole raid takes?
Some mechanics you are told to avoid still pulse the whole raid. When one hit at least 80% of the raid (5 players or more), LogSnitch takes the low quartile of the raid's hits off everyone's count as unavoidable, and the card says so. Only the hits beyond what everyone took are mistakes.
What about puddles?
Standing in a puddle shows as ticks with no hits, so counting hits would say nobody stood in it. LogSnitch counts stays in it instead: ticks close together are one stay (how stays are counted).
Is there an avoidable damage tracker that still works in Midnight?
Since Midnight, addons can no longer read combat events during boss fights, so the in-game trackers raids relied on have stopped being updated. The combat log itself is still written and uploaded: reading it after the pull is what remains. LogSnitch does that, and on a report being logged live it picks up each new pull as it lands.
How does LogSnitch show avoidable damage?
- Each mechanic is a card: every player, every pull, with the hits, the ticks and the damage.
- A strip per player shows the pulls they were caught on, so a habit stands out from a one-off.
- The overview names the player with the most mistakes, pull by pull.
- Counting stops when the wipe began, so the chaos of a lost pull is not charged to anyone (death cutoff).
